Swedish Flower Hen ~ Pen # 1

Hens in Swedish Flower Hen(SFH) Pen #1 are from Barb Bartel who is no longer breeding SFHs.  The rooster is from Leigh Shilling Edwards stock.  He brings a larger size along with a kind attitude to the breeding pen.  2 blue base hens make up the breeding hens in pen # 1. In 2018 a black base hen was a part of this pen, but has been moved to a trio pen.

The Rooster

The Hens

This hen moved to the trio pen of 2 hens and 1 rooster for the 2019 breeding season but was a part of pen # 1 in 2018.
This lovely hen went broody for the first time in the summer of 2019 as a 3 year old. Look below for the pictures of the chicks she hatched from her own eggs.
Pen # 1 Offspring

Pictured below are some examples of chickens that hatched from pen #1.

Cherokee hatched on July 1, 2018 from Pen # 1 and is 6 months old in this picture. I am excited to see him develop. I like him for his large ‘flowers’, his size and his friendly personality. He resides over the hens in Pen # 9.

Below are two pictures of the same hen who is 6 months old in these pictures. I would like to see a more white tips on her feathers or what is called by some ‘flowers’. Often the white tips on their feathers increases with each molt. The white tips on their feathers is what makes them look flowery and is an important characteristic of Swedish Flower Hen.

Offspring of the Blue-based Hen

The pictured below (coming soon) a cross of the blue based hen pictured about that went broody for the first time in the summer of 2019 as a 3 year old hen. I like the longevity of this breed and other heritage chicken breeds. The downside of course is the egg production is a bit limited in the short term. Questions?
